Course Overview

This Engineering Integrated Foundation Year course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as a suitable pathway on to the BEng (Hons) programmes at the university.

This integrated foundation year is offered in association with the five engineering degrees, preparing applicants with non-scientific A- or AS-levels, and mature students with alternative qualifications and experience to undertake an honours degree including BEng in Aeronautical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.

Academic entry requirements

UCAS tariff
200 points with maths and physics at A or AS-level otherwise 260 points. General Studies excluded.

BTEC
MMP/DM

International Baccalaureate
24 points, specified subjects; certificates considered.

GCSE (minimum grade C)
at least five subjects including maths and a physical science (or equivalent).

Mature students
without these qualifications but with relevant industrial experience may be considered.

EU students
must have IELTS 5.0 plus UK AS-level equivalent qualifications including maths and physics (min grade C).

English entry requirements

Students for whom English is not the first language must satisfy the University requirement for IELTS currently at 6.0 overall, with 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in the other elements.

Progression route

Further academic study of BEng (Honours) in Aeronautical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.

Career opportunities

Upon successfully completing the foundation year, students automatically progress to the first year of their chosen degree. These degrees enable students to develop valuable work experience and industry contact while on work placement, and offer graduates excellent employment opportunities.

Modules

The foundation year runs in two parallel streams – a home stream and an EU stream. The home stream is for UK home students but may also include those from outside the UK who require no English language support.

The second stream is for EU students who need to improve their English language skills in addition to their academic qualifications.
