Foundation Year in Business

Course Overview

The Foundation Year in Business is offered as an entry route to a business degree for students who don\'t yet meet the entry requirements for degree-level study. You enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. If you complete this year successfully you progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses in this subject area.

This course has been specifically designed for people who do not have the necessary qualifications to directly enter year one of the undergraduate programme.

This course has a strong emphasis on equipping students with transferable, key skills. It aims to provide you with a wide range of skills and knowledge of basic principles in the relevant subject areas to prepare you for the first year of your degree.

Academic entry requirements

120 UCAS Tariff points, from a minimum of two A levels or equivalent, such as BTEC

English entry requirements

Students for whom English is not the first language must satisfy the University requirement for IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any subcomponent.

Progression route

The Foundation Certificate in Business provides you with the opportunity to develop key skills in appropriate disciplines. Students who successfully complete the year automatically qualify for a place on to bachelor honours course in accounting, business, finance, management, marketing, economics, HRM programmes.

Career opportunities

Upon successfully completing the foundation year, students automatically progress to the first year of their chosen degree. These degrees enable students to develop valuable work experience and industry contact while on work placement, and offer graduates excellent employment opportunities.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods is used throughout the course including continuous assessment, in-class tests, examinations and project work. Using these methods, your all-round ability will be appraised providing you with the best opportunity to excel.


Main learning outcomes

Understanding the Context of Business

  • The aim of this module is to introduce you to the notion of business and all its domains through literature.  In particular, the module develops your ability to source, read, understand and utilise business knowledge effectively. 


SMART (Students Mastering Academic writing, Research and Technology)

  • This module provides students with the fundamental written and oral communication skills required to continue studying at degree level. Students will develop analytical skills through a problem solving approach; build their confidence working individually and as a member of a team, and gain appreciation of research techniques by using libraries and a range of e-learning resources. 


Foundation Mathematics

  • This module introduces some fundamental mathematical topics and concepts that are required in a range of subjects studied at degree level. In a structured and supportive environment students will begin to develop an appreciation of the importance of mathematics as an aid to understand and describe abstract ideas.


Foundation Project

  • This module provides students with experience in a range of related subject-related projects that reinforce understanding of topics taught, and provide opportunities to apply the knowledge gained in other modules.
