ACCA - Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Study

I am keen to pursue the ACCA programme because the programme is a comprehensive and intensive investigation into key areas in accounting and finance - it is both academically rigorous and closely in line with professional practice.

Accounting has been defined as the measurement and disclosure of financial information that is used by managers, investors and others to make decisions about the allocation of resources within organisations. It is much more than just the mechanical manipulation of financial data to produce company accounts. The methods for preparing accounting information must be applied with judgement, and with an understanding of the purposes for which the information will be used. A wide range of decision makers need to understand the key principles which underpin a cost or profit figure produced by an accountant. Therefore the study of ACCA qualification helps to gain skills that are central to the management of organisations, for measuring performance and maintaining the cash flows that are essential for the prosperity of any private company or public sector organisation.

This programme focuses on accounting and finance in an international context addressing current challenges and issues facing the world’s international financial institutions and markets. The study of the course provide important financial information to decision makers both internal and external to an organisation e.g. managers, investors and tax authorities to aid them in decisions on organisational resources. It helps to acquire a multitude of skills sought-after by many employers, accounting provides a whole host of career options.

I had studied AAT Foundation programme in Sri Lanka – in this qualification, I studied basic financial accounting, business mathematics and statistics, economics, commerce. Following this, I followed an HND in the UK – most of the modules in the HND are business, finance and management related. I topped up this knowledge with Strategic Management Accounting, Management of Human Resources, Marketing Strategy, Contemporary Developments Business Management subject in my BA. This were further strengthened with Financial Management and Control, Managing and Leading People, Operations Management, International Business Environment, Marketing Management, Global Corporate Strategy, Information Management, International Marketing subjects in my study of MBA.

The above studies have enabled me acquiring generic knowledge in business and management with a touch in finance and accounting in limited context. Almost everything has chapters related to part of ACCA papers. Therefore, those will complement the ACCA study very strongly. But since ACCA is a superior professional qualification that provides wealth of competency and skills in addition to supreme theoretical insights, I will have the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and skills which will enhance my current levels in every aspects. The progressions in professionalism and higher academic acumen would be unique achievements that I did not experience before.

I will be equipped with the advanced level skills and understanding necessary to effectively and efficiently perform tasks relevant to the corporations or organisations involved with accounting and finance. Once qualified, I will be able to work effectively in teams and independently, to evaluate critically, think creatively and communicate effectively with respect to issues in different areas of accounting and finance; and to recognise good practice in the analysis, planning and management of accounting policies and corporate financial strategies. I also develop an advanced level of understanding of research methods and their application to a wide range of accounting reporting, accounting policies and corporate financial decisions.
