Course Overview

The course covers the full range of accountancy subjects from financial and management accounting to financial management, taxation, auditing and related areas to ensure that you acquire the necessary specialist and generic transferable skills essential to a career in the field of accountancy.

A wide range of teaching and learning approaches are used throughout your degree, with emphasis on teaching towards practical aspects of accounting and assessment that requires completion of financial accounts, budgets, forecasts, tax computations, appraisal of investment projects etc.

Academic entry requirements

English entry requirements

IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any subcomponent. UWS will also consider applicants who have previously studied at degree level, taught and assessed in English, in what UKVI define as a majority English-speaking country.

Assessment methods

Assessment is principally by coursework assignments, group work, reports, case studies, presentations, logbooks and so on.

Progression route

Further academic study of masters of accounting, finance, ACCA, CIMA or other accounting and finance degree or Professional career.

Career opportunities

Graduates are prepared for successful careers in accountancy and finance as well as general business and management. UWS graduates have secured employment with companies including Chivas Brothers, HMRC, Glasgow Airport, National Australia Group, RBS, Shell, the NHS and Sainsbury’s. Graduates can also work towards additional professional exams such as Chartered Institute of Bankers.

Modules

 

Year 1

Studies include financial and management accounting and more general modules, which put accountancy into perspective in the business world.

 

Year 2

This year develops your financial and management accounting experience and introduces specialised areas of accounting such as personal tax.

 

Placement year

An optional one-year placement can be taken between years 2 and 3 (or between years 3 and 4) with a number of well-known UK-based companies. This provides essential practical experience and an attractive addition to your CV.

You may study abroad while gaining credit towards your degree at one of our 80 educational partner organisations.

 

Year 3

In-depth financial and management accounting is taught alongside the core module of auditing, providing excellent practical and theoretical knowledge.

 

Year 4

You will complete a dissertation on your choice of subject and will study the development of accounting standards and contemporary issues in accounting. Optional modules include accounting theory and history and international finance.
