Study in the UK – increase in IHS fees

From 27 October 2020, students and their dependents will have to pay Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) fees of £470 a year for each applicant (the current IHS fee is £300 per year). For more details, please check The Immigration (Health Charge) (Amendment) Order 2020 (SI 2020 No. 1086) here

It was due to increase on 1 October 2020, but delayed to be effective from 27 October 2020.

The IHS fee was first introduced through the Immigration (Health Charge) Order 2015, a statutory instrument made under powers conferred by section 38 of the Immigration Act 2014. Failure to pay the charge will result in an invalid application [paragraph 34(4) of the Immigration Rules]. The IHS fee must be paid to the Home Office during the visa application as part of the immigration application.

The purpose of the IHS is to “ensure that migrants make a proper financial contribution to the cost of their NHS care.”

To find out how much IHS fee you will have to pay, you can check Home Office website here.

You will get a full refund of IHS fee if you paid twice or your visa application is refused or you withdraw your visa application. You will get partial refund of IHS fee if you visa application is successful but, you get less via duration than you applied for or any dependents who have applied for visa with you but got refused. Refunds are made automatically to the card or account from where you paid the IHS.

You will not get any refund if your visa application is successful but you do not come to the UK or you leave the UK before your visa expiry or you are told to leave the UK before your visa ends or you are applying for indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

If you switch to the Tier 2 Health and Care visa, you will get a full refund of your IHS from 31 March 2020. There is no refund of IHS for switching to any other visa. More details about refunds of IHS can be found in Home Office website here.
