No more Police Registration required for international students

UK Home Office abolished the requirement to register with the police (which was applicable to students from certain countries).

UK Home Office abolished the requirements to register with Police for international students of all nationalities with immediate effect from 05 August 2022 (UKCISA, 09/08/2022).

It was one of the student conditions to register with the police known as ‘Police Registration’ for certain nationalities, aged 16 or over, who were coming to the UK for more than six months in certain immigration categories (this included the Student route). The scheme ended on 04 August 2022 - from 5 August 2022, no-one is required to register under the scheme or update their local police force about change ( gov.uk ), more updates to follow. This is retrospective – even if any student’s immigration documentation has requirements to register, they do not need to it any more. If you are confused or concerned about the abolition and require more information on this, you should contact the international student adviser team at your institution or contact UKCISA Students' advice line on +4420 7788 9214. The line is open Monday to Friday (except for public holidays): 1.00pm to 4.00pm (UK time).

Please find answers for a number of questions as per the FAQ document, published by the Home Office, National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) and Counter Terrorism Policing was shared with UKCISA on 08 August 2022 below:

  • Police Registration condition should no longer be added to new grants of immigration permission.
  • If it is printed on an existing visa / BRP / digital status it will not be amended by the Home Office – no new documents will be issued to reflect the change. However, it no longer has any relevance from 05/08/2022.
  • Students who registered in the past and obtained a Police Registration Certificate (PRC), they no longer need to keep it and will not be expected to show it to anyone in the future.
  • Home Office will not refund any fee that you previously paid for registering with the police.
  • Students who have booked an appointment for police registration no longer need to attend it or pay any fee for it.
  • If you failed to register in time prior to 05/08/2022, you are no longer required to register. However, Home Office has not clarified if you will be penalised for breaching this condition or if there would be any impact on your Immigration history or it would have any effect on future immigration applications.
