Indian students take legal action against UK Universities

Indian students are seeking compensation from UK universities as they took full tuition fees, but did not provide expected educational experience during COVID pandemic and due to lecturer strikes.

A class action lawsuit has been initiated by 296 Indian students who studied in the UK between 2017 and 2022 against their British universities. The legal action, prompted by the disruptions caused by the Covid pandemic and university lecturer strikes, aims to seek compensation for the students' grievances. Law firms Harcus Parker and Asserson have been instructed by over 110,000 domestic and international students, including Arunima Ghosh, to represent them in this case through the StudentGroupClaim.co.uk website. Many more students are expected to join the Student Group Claim in the future. The students argue that they paid full fees for an academic experience that they did not receive, alleging that the universities breached their contractual obligations.

Arunima Ghosh, who offered her home as collateral for a loan to finance her MSc in applied bioscience, found her research on chemotherapy's effects on cancerous cells disrupted when the university closed the labs during the pandemic. While European students were permitted to utilise the labs for their projects the following year, Ghosh was informed that her visa could not be extended. Consequently, she now faces difficulties when applying for top jobs that require an example of an experiment, as she was unable to conduct any due to the lab closures. Feeling that she paid substantial sums of money but received none of the promised benefits, Ghosh highlights the grievances shared by the students involved in the class action.
