More girls in school, but only 36% at universities in Bangladesh

The ratio of Bangladeshi male and female students at Secondary and Higher Secondary levels are almost equal but when it comes to university level, only 36% are female students.

The number of female students in Bangladesh has been increasing rapidly in recent years. This is due to a number of factors, including increased educational opportunities and a growing awareness of the importance of education for girls. However, there is still a significant dropout rate among female students, particularly at the university level.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics, the ratio of male and female students who participated in the secondary and higher secondary examinations in the last five years was almost equal. However, only 36.30% of students at the university level are female.

There are a number of reasons for the lower number of female students at the university level. One reason is employment and financial challenges. Many families cannot afford to send their daughters to university, and girls may be expected to help out with household chores or find a job to support their families.

Another reason for the lower number of female students at the university level is social pressure. In some parts of Bangladesh, there is still a stigma attached to girls who continue their education beyond secondary school. Girls may be discouraged from going to university by their families or communities.

Despite these challenges, the number of female students in Bangladesh is on the rise. This is a positive development, as education is essential for girls to reach their full potential. The government and other stakeholders need to work together to address the dropout rate and ensure that all girls have access to quality education.
