Canada to decrease the number of international students due to housing shortages

Canada plans to reduce international student numbers to address housing shortages. The decision is prompted by concerns about the current housing affordability crisis in the country.

Canada is considering placing a limit on the number of international students allowed to live in the country. In a CTV interview, Immigration Minister Marc Miller mentioned that this is due to a housing affordability crisis. He indicated that a decision on this might be made in the next few months, but the extent of the planned reduction in immigration was not disclosed.

In the same interview, Miller highlighted the need to ensure a system that verifies people's financial capacity to come to Canada and validates offer letters. He stated that it's time to discuss the numbers and the impact on specific regions.

Miller also stressed that housing is just one aspect of immigration goals, and the influx of foreign students surpasses the number of homes the federal government aims to support in construction.

The idea of limiting the number of foreign students in Canada was proposed last August. In December, substantial changes were made to study permit requirements, including a significant increase in the financial requirement for the cost of living for study permit applicants.

While Canada remains a popular choice for Bangladeshi students seeking higher education abroad, recent changes in visa and immigration policies are expected to present challenges for these students.
