Northumbria University is a research-rich, business-focused, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence. Northumbria is one of the largest universities in the UK, attracting more than 33,000 students from 135 countries.

The university is based in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, which is regularly voted the best place in the UK for students. In September 2014, Northumbria opened its new London Campus which provides access at undergraduate and postgraduate level to professional, industry-based programmes and provides new links and opportunities for students in the national and international business sector.

The university offers over 450 undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in 8 Academic Schools - Arts and Social Sciences; Built and Natural Environment; Computing; Engineering and Information Sciences; Design; Health; Community and Education Studies; Law; Life Sciences (Sports, Psychology & Applied Sciences) & Newcastle Business School.

Northumbria has great industrial links, deeply embedded in the professional and commercial sectors. The university works with major employers, including Nike, IBM, Nissan, Proctor & Gamble, the BBC, and the NHS, while more than 560 employers and 60 professional bodies sponsor or accredit the University’s programmes.  

The university is ranked 4th in the UK for graduate business start-ups; top ten in the UK for the number of graduates entering professional employment and 9 out of 10 of Northumbria graduates are working or studying six months after graduation

  • The university boasts the largest Law School in the North East of England.The Law Department’s Student Law Office was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, the highest form of national recognition open to a UK university.
  • BPTC students are able to elect to do live client work in Northumbria’s Student Law Office, advising members of the public on real legal problems - it is a unique pro bono legal service provided by the law students. Students are not limited to just advising the clients – they take on their clients cases, research and prepare for trials and represent at courts and tribunals. All the work is done by the students themselves, supervised at every stage by a practitioner member of staff.
  • Northumbria is the only UK university to have had their teacher training courses rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for 12 years running.
  • The 24/7 Library was rated joint 3rd in the country, alongside Cambridge University, in the Times Higher Education 2014 Student Experience Survey. It provides access to more than 570,000 books, 400,000 e-books and 50,000 print and electronic journals.
  • Northumbria’s student accommodation was voted Top 3 in the UK in the National Student Housing Survey 2014.
