Earnings from working in the UK on student visa

Students will have the right to work while continuing their studies in the UK i.e. 10 hours per week if they are studying foundation course, 20 hours per week studying a bachelor, masters or PhD course. Students will be able to work full time per week during holiday period in between your course.

A With the Tawjihiyah/Thanawiya amma (General Secondary Education Certificate) from UAE, you will usually qualify for a foundation course/international foundation year in the UK.

Q What is the academic entry requirement for undergraduate/bachelors course?

A To apply from the United Arab Emirates for our undergraduate courses, you'll need either

  • A Levels or International Baccalaureate
  • Associate degree (American University in Dubai) University Diploma
  • a recognised International Foundation course from a UK institution following a validated UK syllabus
  • Standard XII awarded by the CISCE/CBSE or another recognised state exam board

If you have a High National Diploma (HND) or Higher Diploma you can apply for advanced entry onto a relevant undergraduate programme.

You may be able to join an undergraduate course with other qualifications too.

Q What is the academic entry requirement for postgraduate/master’s course?

A If you hold a relevant 4 year Bachelor’s degree from a recognised UAE university (usually with a grade of 'very good’ jayyid jiddan) you will be considered for postgraduate study. Grades requirements may vary for different universities/courses.

QWhat is the academic entry requirement for PhDs and other research degrees?

A To apply for a PhD (or other postgraduate research qualification) you must have an undergraduate (Bachelors) degree from a recognised university, usually in a related subject area, with a GPA score of 3.0 out of 4.00 or 80% and above (depending on the subject that you wish to study) which is equivalent to a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree (also known as a 2:1). Some universities may require a master’s degree, where a Master’s degree is required, this is indicated in the relevant description on the university website.

You will also usually need to provide a research proposal for your proposed PhD/Research study in the UK.

Q Do I need to maintain maintenance funds for UK student visa application from UAE?

A If you are a Emirates Citizen applying for your student visa from UAE which is a low risk country, you do not need to submit evidence of maintenance funds but you still need to maintain it as required by UKVI. They may ask to submit it any time after your visa application.

Q Do I need to submit my educational certificates with my student visa application from UAE?

A Emirates students applying from UK student visa from UAE do not need to submit educational certificates with their visa application. However, you may need to submit these if UKVI ask for these after your application.

QCan I stay back in the UK after my degree?

A If you successfully complete your bachelors or master’s degree from a UK University, you will be entitled for 2 year graduate visa (post study work visa) or if you successfully complete a PhD/Research Degree, you will be entitled for 3 year graduate visa (post study work visa).

After this, you may take admission for further studies in the UK or switched to skilled work visa or other immigration category leading to settlement in the UK.
