Undergraduate course

Bachelor course i.e. BA, BSc, Bed, LLB etc. courses are known us undergraduate degree courses in the UK. A regular undergraduate bachelor degree course duration is normally 3 years at UK universities and qualifies international students for 2 years Graduate (PSW) visa.

Typically, an undergraduate bachelor degree qualification is taught and awarded by a university and defines higher or advanced level (RQF level 6) of learning than GCE Advanced Level.

Most of the bachelor degrees in the UK lead to an honours degree in 3 years. However, students who have completed foundation degree programme, Diplomas of Higher Education (DipHE), Certificates of Higher Education (CertHE), Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC) which are at level 4 or level 5 may qualify for exemptions from the 1st year or 1st & 2nd year of the relevant bachelor degree programme and choose to do top up for the remaining credits (a UK bachelor degree normally offers a total of 360 credits, 120 credits per year of study).

Some universities offer accelerated bachelor honours degrees in 2 years. Bachelor degrees with placement or integrated foundation course or integrated master’s course could be offered over 4 to 5 years.

In Scotland, Bachelor Degrees normally last 4 years and some of them are even called MA (Master of Arts) though they are honours degrees.

Q What are the entry requirements for undergraduate bachelor degree courses in UK universities?

A Entry requirements for undergraduate bachelor degree courses may vary university to university and course to course. Find below a general guide -

Entry requirements: Academic

A level equivalent Higher Secondary qualification of 12 years of study completion. This may vary country to country and there could be requirement for additional qualification.

Entry requirements: English proficiency

IELTS overall band score of minimum 6.0 with minimum 5.5 across all components (Pre-sessional English course with bachelors will require IELTS for UKVI with no component below 4.5).

Some universities may require IELTS overall band score of minimum 6.5 and some courses for example, Nursing may require higher IELTS score i.e.6.5/7 overall and across all components.

Q Is it mandatory to apply through UCAS for admission at an undergraduate bachelor degree in UK University?

A No, it is not mandatory to apply through UCAS for most of the universities as many universities have options for direct online application too for almost all bachelor courses. You can apply direct via the online application portal or if you are taking help from an authorised agent, they will be able to submit the application on your behalf.

Q What if I have a lower than required score in English test and do not meet the English entry requirements?

A If you have a IELTS academic for UKVI or other UKVI SELT with lower score than it is required, you might be able to take the course with Pre-sessional English (PSE), the duration and fees of the PSE course will be determined according to the English test score you have.

Q Will I require DBS check clearance for my course?

A You will require a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check formerly known as a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check clearance to study some courses including Medicine, Education, Nursing, Teaching, Social Work, Sports, Health & Social Care, Clinical courses etc.

If you require a DBS for your course, you may be required to provide evidence of your criminal record status from your home country or any country that you have lived in for a period of 6 months within the last 5 years.

If you are ineligible for a police check in the country you lived in outside the UK (because you were under the age required for a police check or you were not a national of the country you lived), references from previous places of study or employment from that country might be accepted.

You may also be required to apply for a DBS disclosure once you arrive in the UK and provide documents to your university at the start of your course.

Q Who will require Occupational Health (OH) checks? How to clear the OH checks?

A : Students who are going to study any health course and BMBS course will require obtaining Occupational Health clearance. This is to ensure that you are fit for all aspects of the course, and also to protect the public who may be affected by your placement activities.

Prior to this all offer holders will be issued with details of the online pre-course health screening questionnaire that must be completed prior to the commencement of the course. Completion of an occupational health (OH) assessment questionnaire is a formal condition of any offer made. Failure to meet this condition would result in forfeiture of a place on the course. Details of the procedure for completing the OH assessment questionnaire are sent by the university with the offer letter.

Through the information provided in the pre-course health screening questionnaire it may be deemed necessary for you to attend an appointment with an OH authorised person prior to the start of the course.

New students are required to attend an Occupational Health check session during induction and get clearance at the commencement of the course.

Q What are the IELTS Score requirements for BMBS (Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery) course admission in the UK? Is there any admission test for BMBS course?

A To undertake an BMBS course in the UK, in addition to the required academic entry qualifications, you must IELTS overall score of 7.0 with at least 7.0 in each component.

You will also require sitting the BMAT (Biomedical Admissions Test) in order to be considered for BMBS course admission interview.
